Three thousand miles away in Portland, Oregon, crime-scene reconstructionist Rod Englert briefed his partner Robert Stites about the Camm murders. Earlier that day, Floyd County Prosecutor Stan Faith had called him to discuss the murders, hiring him to investigate the blood evidence and reconstruct the crime.

Englert was speaking at a conference that weekend so he asked Stites to fly out to New Albany instead and start work.

“My task was just collect the information for him at the crime scene,” said Stites, who brought a large suitcase full of lighting and other specialized equipment.

The former police officer, who has worked homicide cases for U.S. Army and Naval Intelligence, first heard about the case at 1:30 p.m. Pacific Time. Ten hours later he was on the red-eye flight from Seattle-Tacoma airport to Louisville to begin.
